Flathead judges Eddy, Wilson square off for Montana Supreme Court seat
The open seat follows Beth Baker’s departure after three terms, and both candidates bring years on the Flathead County District Court bench.
Flathead County District Court Judge Amy Eddy won a seat on the Montana Supreme Court, defeating fellow District Court Judge Dan Wilson. With an estimated 75% of votes counted, Eddy secured 61.3% of the vote to Wilson's 38.7%.
This contest was the first since the Republican-controlled state Legislature passed House Bill 39 in 2025, allowing parties to contribute directly to judicial candidates. While races remain officially nonpartisan, Wilson accepted Montana Republican Party support while Eddy promoted judicial independence.
Outside spending totaled nearly $2.9 million in television advertising, with $2.3 million from outside groups. Montanans for Freedom and Responsibility spent nearly $1.5 million targeting Wilson, while More Jobs Less Government and Justice Watch funded additional critical ads.
Constitutional Initiative 132 passed with voter approval, mandating that judicial elections remain nonpartisan. The Associated Press called the measure at 11:40 p.m. with 69.5% of the 'yes' vote and an estimated 72% of ballots counted.
Eddy's victory extends a winning streak for women seeking seats on Montana's highest court, marking four consecutive contested victories. She will replace Associate Justice Beth Baker, who has served since 2011, for an eight-year term.
