Five remain in B.C. Conservative leadership race as membership swells to 42,000
Each candidate paid a $60,000 fee as the party’s membership rose about six-fold to 42,000 before the leadership vote.
On April 22, the Conservative Party confirmed a final list of five leadership candidates, a contest that has swelled party membership to 42,000 by the April 18 deadline.
Former Liberal cabinet minister Iain Black, political commentator Caroline Elliott, MLA Peter Milobar, former federal Conservative MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay, and entrepreneur Yuri Fulmer are competing to replace former leader John Rustad.
Executive director Angelo Isidorou says the party has "come incredibly far in just a few years," becoming what he calls the "largest political party" by membership after growing from 7,000 in December. Fulmer's campaign claimed last week it sold 15,417 new memberships.
Candidates will participate in a debate this Friday in Vancouver, with the party sending ballots on May 9 and announcing the new leader at its convention on May 30.
By comparison, the Greens leadership race that elected Emily Lowan last year saw 8,641 members cast ballots, while the NDP did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding their membership statistics.
