Five bodies recovered from landslide site in Odisha
Rescue teams used controlled explosions to clear boulders as search crews recovered five bodies, raising the death toll to seven, officials said.
Disaster response teams recovered five bodies on Thursday at Gidipabali in Odisha, bringing the death toll to seven after six days of intensive search operations following the landslide.
The landslide, believed to have occurred on October 28, 2026, resulted from heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Arnab; 13 residents escaped with minor injuries, though Ganjam district administration was informed only after two days.
Six days of search operations involved personnel from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force , National Disaster Response Force , Odisha Fire Service, and Special Operations Group . The absence of an access road hindered deployment of heavy machinery.
Controlled explosions were carried out to remove massive boulders obstructing operations at Gidipabali. Fire Services Director General Sudhanshu Sarangi described the debris-clearing task as a "herculean challenge."
Kandhamal Collector Vedbhusan confirmed the five victims were a couple and their three children, residents of Gidipabali. Government sources indicated rescue operations would continue to ensure no one remains trapped beneath debris.
