Five Teens Arrested over Violent Dating App Assaults
Police say the suspects posed as dating app users and targeted 113 incidents since January 2024, with 47 arrests made statewide.
- Victoria Police arrested five males, aged 16 to 18, last week after 11 incidents were reported in the Greater Dandenong area of Melbourne. The teenagers face charges including armed robbery, sexual assault, and kidnapping.
- Offenders allegedly posed as legitimate users on online dating platforms to lure men into meetings. Once victims arrived, they were assaulted, robbed, and subjected to homophobic comments.
- Police have recorded 113 total incidents since January 2024, with 75 occurring in 2024, 27 in 2025, and 11 in 2026. Across the state, 47 people have been arrested for similar attacks.
- Acting Inspector Jarrod Dwyer described the behavior as concerning, stating, "There is no place for it in our society and it will not be tolerated by police." Dwyer emphasized these arrests demonstrate commitment to accountability.
- Dwyer affirmed that everyone deserves safety when meeting new people through dating platforms. "Everyone has a right to go about their lives, meet new people and start a relationship in safety," he added.
