PAMPLONA, NAVARRE, JUL 7 – Thousands of runners participated in the opening bull run of the San Fermín festival, with dozens injured and six bulls charging through Pamplona’s historic streets, organizers said.
- Thousands of runners participate each morning in the San Fermín bull-running festival held annually in Pamplona, Spain.
- Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises, which follows American bohemians in Europe, helped bring worldwide recognition to the festival.
- Each day’s run lasts three to four minutes over an 846-meter cobblestone course with thousands of spectators watching from balconies and barricades.
- Up to 4,000 runners sprint ahead of six bulls led by steers while many suffer injuries or gorings, and four runners died on the deadliest day, July 13, 1980.
- The festival lasts nine days with bullfights each afternoon where professional matadors slaughter the morning’s bulls as part of ongoing cultural entertainment.
