First responders help deliver baby for the first time in grocery store parking lot
EMTs and a firefighter delivered a healthy baby girl after dispatch told the father to pull over as his wife’s labor advanced.
On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Turner Fire-Rescue emergency medical technicians Chris Bellefleur and Sean Connelly delivered a baby girl in the Food City parking lot along Route 4 in Turner, Maine.
A husband driving his wife to a Lewiston hospital while she was in labor pulled over after dispatch instructions, stopping in the grocery store parking lot shortly before 2:30 a.m.
Bellefleur made contact with the mother, noted the baby's head was crowning, and commenced delivery. "One minute later, we had a healthy baby girl in my hands," Bellefleur said.
Turner Firefighter Camden Pack arrived to assist in transporting the family to the hospital. "Mom and dad were both very grateful that we arrived when we did," Pack said.
EMS Chief Lisa Bennett announced the ambulance will receive a stork decal, commemorating the successful delivery. Responders earn a "stork pin" for field births under the department's tradition.
