First Nation in N.S. launches joint venture using sea water to produce jet fuel
Eskasoni will invest $1.5 million and hold a majority stake in the $4 million pilot project, which aims to create low-cost fuels and about 80 jobs.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026, Eskasoni First Nation Councillor Bertram Bernard and Aeon Blue CEO Lark Meadow signed a joint venture agreement establishing eFuels Mi'kmaq Limited to produce rocket fuel from seawater.
Eskasoni is investing $1.5 million into the $4 million project, securing a majority ownership stake in the venture with Aeon Blue.
The startup plans to use saltwater electrochemistry to split hydrogen from seawater while capturing CO2, creating low-cost fuels for aviation and rocket sectors.
Currently at the pilot stage, the venture is expected to create about 80 jobs in engineering and management, Chief Leroy Denny said.
"Economic development and environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand," Denny said, positioning the partnership as a model for sustainable community growth.
