Firefighters survive 8-foot fall into burning basement after floor collapses at vacant home
Both firefighters escaped without injury, and Albuquerque Fire Rescue said training and teamwork helped prevent a tragedy in a basement fire.
On Wednesday at 6 a.m., two Albuquerque Fire Rescue firefighters fell eight feet through a floor into a basement fire at Alcazar Street and Marquette Avenue near Louisiana Boulevard.
Crews split up during the response, with Engine 13 working on the first floor and Engine 5 operating in the basement of the vacant structure showing signs of human occupancy.
Lt. Jason Fejer said thermal imaging cameras detected heat in the floor just before collapse, triggering an immediate "Mayday, mayday, mayday, Engine 13 with a mayday, firefighters fell through the floor" call.
Fejer noted that "if we weren't putting water on the fire when those guys went through, this could have been catastrophic." The department will review response procedures and scene management.
Albuquerque Fire Rescue, which has never experienced a line-of-duty death, remains committed to searching vacant buildings despite risks, emphasizing that crew training and teamwork prevented tragedy.
