"The Situation Is Out of Control": Greek Firefighters Battle Wildfire for Fourth Day
More than 400 firefighters and 21 aircraft are trying to stop the blaze from reaching homes as it destroys pine forests and olive trees.
- A massive wildfire continues burning in western Attica, where 450 firefighters work to contain flare-ups across a front that has scorched approximately 132,900 stremmas, with ground crews concentrating efforts on three main fronts near Psatha and Mount Kithairon.
- Preliminary investigations indicate the fire began July 31 in Boeotia, spreading 25km after sparks from faulty power lines on a private wind turbine transmission system ignited vegetation. An electrical engineer and a contractor were arrested for investigation.
- Resident Anastasia Hatzoglou described devastating losses, stating, "It's an awful feeling, when you build something with so much effort." Separately, two crew members died in a helicopter crash near Psatha on Sunday after a mid-air collision.
- Nikos Lavranos, head of the Federation of Unions of Fire Service Employees, warned that operations have overstretched staff. "A firefighter who is useful to fellow citizens and society is a rested firefighter, not an exhausted one," he said.
- Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Costas Katsafados continues coordinating the response as authorities warn of very high wildfire risk on Tuesday in Attica, Evia, and Chios. The Greek fire service remains on nationwide alert.
