Wildfires in Europe Can Create "Fire Clouds" That May Trigger Lightning, Fierce Winds, and Even More Flames
Officials said the fire cloud produced lightning and erratic winds that spread the blaze and forced 220,000 people to evacuate.
- A massive wildfire near Saumos, France, generated a rare pyrocumulonimbus cloud on July 22, forcing 220,000 people to evacuate in Gironde. The blaze has burned more than 420 sq km, destroying more than 240 homes.
- Dr. Francesca Di Giuseppe, Fire Forecast Coordinator at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts , said the cloud develops when intense heat generates a rapidly rising column of air, smoke and moisture. Nasa has described the plumes as the "fire-breathing dragon of clouds."
- These storms produce erratic winds and lightning strikes capable of igniting new fires beyond the original blaze. ITV Weather Presenter Becky Mantin noted that while clouds can produce rain, hot air often causes droplets to evaporate before reaching ground, leaving terrain dry.
