Twenty-two years ago, Finland invested €1 billion (approximately US$1.16 billion) to build the Onkalo spent nuclear fuel repository, which is now nearing commissioning. This facility, located 433 meters underground, will seal nuclear waste deep within the bedrock, and is expected to remain safely isolated for up to 100,000 years.
Located more than 400 meters underground, Finland's Onkalo nuclear waste storage facility will soon be operational, offering an optimal solution to a long-standing problem facing the global energy industry for more than half a century.
