Leeds Handed Six-Game Tanaka Boost as 2027 Asian Cup Decision Confirmed
The rescheduled tournament keeps Leeds midfielder Ao Tanaka available for January fixtures, after the AFC shifted the competition 11 months later.
On Tuesday, the Asian Football Confederation officially postponed the 2027 Asian Cup, rescheduling the 24-team tournament from January 7 to December 23, 2027, through January 21, 2028.
Following Houthi attacks on three airports in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, last month, the AFC cited "exceptional circumstances" and logistical complexities as reasons for the delay.
Leeds United midfielder Ao Tanaka will remain available for club duty in January, avoiding absences that would have impacted Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday during the original tournament window.
Japan's national team, featuring Tanaka and Zion Suzuki, will no longer miss Premier League matches against Manchester City, while defender Lucas Herrington also avoids international duty.
JFA President Tsuneyasu Miyamoto stated, "We respect the AFC's decision to change the dates," though the new schedule still requires final approval from FIFA.
