Ferry to ferry: Cowichan Valley Nightmare takes pack of cyclists from Nanaimo to North Saanich
The unsupported 203-kilometre ride will draw cyclists to the Nanaimo terminal with no registration, insurance or prizes, route hosts said.
On Friday, cyclists will gather at the Departure Bay terminal in Nanaimo for the 'Cowichan Valley Nightmare,' an unofficial overnight ferry-to-ferry ride to Swartz Bay.
Styled after the underground 'Tour Divide,' the ride is completely unsupported with no registration, insurance, or prizes for participants in this informal group gathering.
The 203km route follows the Cowichan Valley Trail primarily on gravel with 1744m of elevation, utilizing Vancouver Island's rail trail and bike path network.
Informants suggest wearing hi-vis vests for road portions and carrying bear spray, while reminding riders to remain quiet, respectful, and observant of traffic signals.
Riders show and go at their own risk for this sixth annual overnight journey, with route details available online for those choosing to participate.
