Feds want pro-Palestinian activist jailed amid University of Michigan terror case
Prosecutors say she destroyed evidence and led a campaign of threats, vandalism and attacks that targeted University of Michigan leaders and businesses.
- On November 2, prosecutors requested the detention of Zainab Hakim of Canton Township, alleging she destroyed evidence during a federal sting. "She knowingly and purposefully destroyed evidence and tried to hide it," prosecutors wrote.
- Hakim allegedly led a campaign targeting the Jewish Federation and other leaders with vandalism and threats to force local institutions to sever ties with Israel. In all, 12 people have been charged since May in this investigation.
- Court filings cite evidence of Hakim's alleged antisemitic rhetoric, including references to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack at the Nova music festival where 378 were killed. Messages proposed chants involving Iran and Yemen.
- A federal sting last week led to charges against four more people, including Hakim's live-in boyfriend, Henry David Mackeen-Shapiro, 23, of Detroit. The coordinated arrests expanded the investigation significantly.
- Defense attorney Amanda Bashi intends to challenge the detention allegations, stating prosecutors' case is contestable. District Judge Judith Levy previously relaxed Hakim's bond conditions in September, though prosecutors argue no conditions can prevent her criminal behavior.
