Canada announces $688-million contract for RADARSAT replenishment satellite
The satellite will help maintain uninterrupted RADARSAT data and support Arctic security, ground operations and emergency response, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced a $688-million contract with Toronto-based MDA Space Ltd. to build a new replenishment satellite for the RADARSAT Constellation Mission.
- The RADARSAT program operates a constellation of three satellites that scan 90 per cent of the world's surface up to four times daily, supporting Canada's Earth observation capabilities.
- MDA Space employs about 4,000 people in Canada, including 2,000 in Montreal, while the new project is expected to create about 100 jobs for the duration of development.
- Canadian Space Agency acting president Jean-Claude Piedboeuf noted radar technology enables observation through clouds, rain, and snow, ensuring "where Canada needs sovereign access to this critical data of Earth observation."
- This contract is part of a 15-year investment worth more than $1 billion announced in October 2023, with the new satellite expected to launch in the early 2030s.
