Feds rack up arrests in Memphis as part of Trump admin's latest crime crackdown operation
The federal task force, launched under a presidential order, supports local police and has arrested 93 people while seizing 28 illegal firearms to reduce crime.
- On Oct. 1, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said 40 arrests were made in MEMPHIS, Tenn., as part of the Memphis Safe Task Force, including a Tren de Aragua terrorist, Bondi said.
- Launched on Monday, Sept. 29, the operation mobilized 13 state and federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, ATF and DEA, with 219 officers special deputized, officials said.
- Bondi posted that in just 72 hours the task force made a major impact, with 53 arrests and 20 illegal firearms seized by the next morning, and 93 arrests and 28 illegal guns seized to date.
- Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced $100 million in grants, saying, `What my plan is that this will be a force multiplier to the Memphis Police Department`.
- Across cities critics pointed to prior deployments when Oregon officials and Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek called the move `unlawful and unwarranted`, linking it to more than 700 officers sent to Portland in 2020 and President Donald Trump’s `training ground` comment.
