Distracted Driving Blamed After Delivery Truck Slams Into Rock Wall Near Sicamous
Police say distracted driving caused the crash, which destroyed the truck and closed Highway 97A for about 45 minutes.
- On Monday, June 15, a FedEx truck crashed into a rock wall south of Sicamous after the driver left the northbound lane; Sicamous RCMP responded to the scene north of Swansea Point at 10:45 a.m.
- RCMP Sgt. McNeil stated distracted driving caused the collision, noting road conditions were excellent with clear visibility as the driver failed to maintain the northbound lane.
- Highway closures compounded the disruption: the crash closed the northbound route for approximately 45 minutes, causing significant traffic backups while the Bruhn Bridge remained under construction.
- Impact from the collision tore the truck cab open, completely destroying the vehicle; however, the driver remained uninjured despite failing to deliver the Purple Promise.
- Separately, a head-on crash occurred on Highway 1 near Salmon Arm, sending 4 people to the hospital in "critical condition" the same day.
