Morrisey Announces Program Providing New Mothers with Essentials
The federal program will provide 2,000 kits with diapers, wipes and postpartum supplies to help new parents start with basic health resources.
- On Friday, Governor Patrick Morrisey and HRSA Administrator Tom Engels launched the national expansion of the Newborn Essentials Support Toolkit program at WVU Medicine Golisano Children's in Morgantown, with West Virginia becoming the first state to receive kits.
- The federal government is investing $5 million to launch the NEST initiative nationwide, while West Virginia simultaneously invests $200 million in federal Rural Health Transformation funding to expand care access and strengthen the healthcare workforce.
- Each NEST kit contains more than 20 newborn and postpartum essentials, including diapers, wipes, an infant thermometer, postpartum recovery supplies, breastfeeding items, and a blood pressure monitor for detecting postpartum health complications.
- Postpartum preeclampsia can develop up to six weeks after birth, making home monitoring essential; the CDC advises mothers to seek immediate care for warning signs including severe headaches, chest pain, vision changes, or fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
- This expansion builds on a 2023 pilot that distributed 30,000 kits across 15 states; a 2024 evaluation found 99% of recipients would recommend the NEST program, with 76% reporting reduced anxiety and 72% noting less financial stress.
