The Navy operates 11 aircraft carriers - ten Nimitz-class ships and one Ford-class. Federal law requires it to maintain a minimum of 11 operational carriers. USS Nimitz was extended to at least 2027 specifically to hold that number until USS John F. Kennedy arrives. If Kennedy slips again, the fleet drops to 10.
