FDA approves first-of-its-kind robotic device designed to automatically draw blood from patients
Clinical testing showed Aletta performed blood draws at rates comparable to or better than trained human phlebotomists, the FDA said.
The Food and Drug Administration authorized Aletta, a standalone robotic device designed to automate blood draws in outpatient settings without hands-on operator intervention.
Michelle Tarver, director of the FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health, stated that "blood draws are one of the most commonly performed medical procedures in the United States, yet patients may face delays due to a growing shortage of trained phlebotomists."
Aletta uses near-infrared light and Doppler ultrasound to identify suitable veins, while one phlebotomist can supervise up to three devices simultaneously during each blood-draw session.
Clinical testing showed Aletta achieved successful blood-draw rates comparable to or better than trained phlebotomists; the device incorporates safety measures including automatic needle detachment if excessive patient movement occurs.
Although Aletta has received federal authorization, no official timeline exists for when providers will begin implementing the robotic device in doctors' offices across the United States.
