Trump to announce largest steel plant in U.S. history will be built in Iowa
On Monday, President Donald Trump will announce a $15 billion plan by Minnesota-based Mesabi Metallics to build a steel plant in Iowa over the coming years, a White House official said.
The project will feature full vertical integration, utilizing iron ore from Mesabi's new $2.5 billion Minnesota mine, with the facility expected to reach 10 million tons of steel annually by 2030.
Construction is expected to support 5,000 to 6,000 jobs, while the plant will create at least 1,750 permanent positions in Iowa and support U.S. defense projects, officials said.
The announcement arrives less than 40 days before midterm elections, with Iowa Republicans facing competitive races as the administration highlights the investment to promote domestic manufacturing.
Last year, the administration doubled tariffs on imported steel to 50%, and steel levies remain part of ongoing trade disputes the White House aims to address through domestic investment.
US President Donald Trump unveiled at the White House a $15 billion steel complex in Iowa owned by Essar Group company Mesabi Metallics. The project will connect a mine in Minnesota with a plant in Iowa, and Trump described it as a major boost to American manufacturing and the steel industry.
