Father who died alongside two family members in water off Shoreham was Palestinian refugee, embassy says
The embassy said Hossam Al-Khawas was a Palestinian refugee from Lebanon, while a younger girl remains in hospital in critical condition.
- On Tuesday, Palestinian refugee Hossam Al-Khawas died after entering the water near Shoreham Fort in Shoreham-by-Sea. The Palestinian embassy confirmed Al-Khawas was one of three family members who perished, while a young girl remains in critical condition.
- The Palestinian embassy identified Al-Khawas as a refugee from the Rashidieh Camp in Lebanon. Emergency services, including police and coastguard crews, pulled four people from the water after the family got into difficulty near the harbour on Tuesday afternoon.
- Sussex Police confirmed the three deceased included Hassan El-Khawas, 55, his partner Zeina Alayn, 37, and their 14-year-old daughter Sara El-Khawas. A file is being prepared for the HM Coroner as the force supports the family's next of kin.
- Andy Burnham described the incident as "a terrible family tragedy" and urged caution regarding open water risks. East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tom Rutland said the community was "shocked and saddened" and stressed the need for water safety education.
- Officials stressed that cold water can shock swimmers even during heatwaves, highlighting the ongoing need for public water safety education. Residents continue expressing concern for the young girl still receiving hospital treatment following the tragedy.
