Fatal crash spurs mother to seek road safety alert
The victim’s mother says a warning system could help prevent wrong-way crashes after a driver traveled more than 2 miles before the fatal collision.
On November 5, 2024, a wrong-way driver struck and killed Austin LaVicka after traveling more than two miles against traffic on a highway.
Seeking to prevent similar tragedies, his mother Christina LaVicka founded a digital platform to advocate for safety technology that warns drivers of roadway hazards.
The proposed system would allow drivers to trigger alerts using voice commands, specifying the danger type and location to notify motorists within a 2-mile radius.
During the incident, several drivers called for help to report the vehicle's wrong-way trajectory. LaVicka said she is living to remember her son and advocate for change.
The initiative remains in early development stages as LaVicka continues sharing memories of Austin to build support for the safety technology concept.
