Farmers report 'catastrophic' damage to crops as Storm Marta hits Spain and Portugal

Storm Marta forced over 11,000 evacuations and caused damage exceeding €4 billion, worsening conditions after recent storms in Spain and Portugal, officials reported.

  • Farmers in Spain warned on Saturday that torrential rains and high winds left fields submerged and caused millions of euros in crop damage, with Perez saying, `'It is raining without stopping. Crops like broccoli, carrots and cauliflowers are under water. We have a real natural catastrophe.'`
  • A succession of storms in recent weeks, including Storm Leonardo and Storm Kristin, battered the Iberian Peninsula and saturated soils forced dam releases equal to a year's consumption in three days.
  • More than 11,000 people were evacuated in Andalusia, nearly 170 roads closed and rail services disrupted, while authorities issued orange alerts for gusts up to 110 km/h, waves of five to seven metres, and snow levels around 900 metres.
  • Portugal mobilised more than 26,500 rescuers and postponed Sunday’s presidential vote in three municipalities, while Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said provisional damage exceeded four billion euros and Spain’s Pedro Sanchez held a crisis meeting.
  • With emergency services stretched and saturated ground, officials warned another Atlantic front could arrive later on Sunday while flood and landslide risks remain high.
