Family of Nolan Wells Meets with DA as Investigation Into His July 4 Disappearance and Death Ongoing
The family has hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump and is seeking transparency as two autopsies remain pending, officials said.
On Wednesday, Christine and Elmore Wonsley met with Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath for the first time since their 18-year-old son, Nolan Wells, was found dead near Horn Island on July 6.
Wells disappeared after a Fourth of July boat trip to Horn Island with friends, and his body was discovered two days later; Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter continues an active investigation.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump announced the family and investigators will conduct a "mutual inspection" of Wells' cellphone, while official state and independent autopsy results remain pending.
After the sheriff's investigation concludes, McIlrath plans to present the case to a grand jury to determine if charges are warranted. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, July 20, at Center Pointe Church.
Ledbetter is asking the public for original photos and videos from Horn Island to counter online misinformation, urging witnesses to come forward with firsthand information about the day Wells disappeared.
