Failure to Invest in Agricultural Training Risks UK Food Security
Lantra says six in 10 land-based jobs are high-demand and urges coordinated training to protect food supply and rural growth.
On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Lantra warned the UK land-based sector faces a critical skills gap, calling for urgent government action to integrate the industry into the national skills strategy.
Despite managing over 80% of UK land and contributing £41 billion in annual societal value, the sector remains heavily dependent on food imports, which totalled £64 billion in 2024.
Skills England data indicates around six in ten land-based jobs are high-demand, while employees with Level 3 qualifications generate £38,000 in net economic value, rising to £90,000 for apprenticeships.
Nick Juba, Lantra Chief Executive Officer, stated the UK "risks damaging its food security" without a "unified, coordinated strategy" recognising the land-based sector as a key pillar of national skills planning.
The sector adds £2.5 billion in Gross Value Added and supports 452,900 jobs; strengthening this workforce requires aligning training frameworks with national priorities including nature recovery and climate resilience.
