Exxon Mobil Shuts Down Joliet Refinery After Power Outage
Exxon said crews are assessing the site and investigating the cause as the outage threatens 11 million gallons a day of fuel output.
- On Sunday, ExxonMobil shut down its 264,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Joliet, Illinois, after a power outage triggered the facility's safety flare. Power was restored that evening, but the plant remains offline during site assessment.
- The blackout began at 3:30 p.m. Central Time and lasted until around 7 p.m., according to company statement. Loss of power activated the safety flare, which forced the plant-wide shutdown.
- Supplying the Midwest, the Joliet refinery can produce about 11 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel daily. The stoppage lands in an already strained global fuel market.
- National average diesel prices crossed $6 a gallon last week, as supply strains from the Iran war and Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries leave the market vulnerable to disruptions.
- Exxon is currently working to determine the cause of the outage and remains in contact with appropriate agencies. IIR Energy expects the refinery to return to normal service by the end of this week.
