Experts Warn Fall Clock Change Can Increase Heart Attack Risk
Sleep experts say the twice-yearly clock change can disrupt circadian rhythms and raise risks for sleep loss, stress and other health problems.
- Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, when most of the United States returns to standard time. At 2 a.m., clocks will be set back one hour, giving residents an extra hour of sleep.
- The United States adopted daylight saving during World War I to conserve fuel, not to benefit farmers as myth suggests. Congress established the modern framework through the Uniform Time Act of 1966, codifying the twice-yearly practice.
- Neuroscientist Laura Bojarskaite at the University of Oslo says the change creates "a mild form of social jet lag." Dr. Eric Zhou of Harvard Medical School notes this disruption can lead to "sleep deprivation, increased stress, and more fatigue."
- Not all states observe daylight saving time; Hawaii and most of Arizona remain on standard time year-round. Several territories including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands also do not participate in the biannual adjustment.
- The House voted in July to approve the Sunshine Protection Act, legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent nationwide. The Senate has not yet voted on the measure, leaving the twice-yearly clock changes in place.
