Expectations on Rise, Excitement 'Picking up' for US Men's Soccer Team
Recent results and standout performances have made the U.S. team’s World Cup prospects feel more tangible, with fans and players growing more confident.
On Thursday, the Americans departed the Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center, heading to Chicago for a final friendly against Germany before traveling to their Irvine base camp for the June 12 match against Paraguay.
The 2026 World Cup marks a return to hosting for the United States, which invested in state-of-the-art facilities after failing to qualify for a previous tournament, an omission that drove significant buy-in.
Midfielder Malik Tillman said, "Obviously, we as players want to win every game that we play," while defender Joe Scally noted the excitement is "getting bigger and bigger" as the tournament approaches.
As a host, the United States was placed into Pot 1 and leads Group D with Turkey, Australia, and Paraguay; the tournament expanded to 48 teams across 12 groups.
Advancing beyond the 32-team elimination stage is expected, though the United States aims for the quarterfinals, a milestone achieved just one time since the tournament began.
