Exclusive-Silver Lake, PIF have held recent talks to buy gaming software provider Unity, sources say
The potential buyout would be among the largest leveraged software deals in recent years, after Unity reported quarterly results that beat Wall Street estimates.
- On Thursday, gaming software provider Unity Software entered talks to be acquired by a consortium including private equity firm Silver Lake Partners and Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund.
- Silver Lake, which owns about 8 per cent of Unity, invested up to $400 million in the company in 2017 and previously partnered with PIF to acquire Electronic Arts for $55 billion in August.
- Before Unity's latest earnings report, the buyer consortium discussed a valuation of about $25 billion, though the company's market capitalization now stands at roughly $21.5 billion following strong third-quarter results that beat Wall Street estimates.
- Following the acquisition report, Unity shares rose nearly 15% in regular trading as the company works with an investment bank to evaluate its options; no deal is certain and terms may change.
- Such a transaction would rank among the biggest leveraged buyouts in the software sector in recent years, with Unity's game engine already powering popular titles like "Monopoly Go!" across multiple platforms.
