Ping Ping and Fu Shuang Head to Zoo Atlanta Under 10-Year Pact
The 10-year agreement is meant to support conservation and research as the pandas prepare for an 8,000-mile move, Zoo Atlanta said.
Two 6-year-old giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, are preparing to leave Chengdu, China, for Zoo Atlanta under a new 10-year conservation agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
Zoo Atlanta previously hosted pandas Lun Lun and Yang Yang for 25 years until 2024, continuing a tradition of 'panda diplomacy' that began when China gifted pandas to the U.S. in 1972.
While Ping Ping tends to follow his keepers, Fu Shuang—whose name means "double happiness"—is timid but clever, having been born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
The agreement follows a November 2023 meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden, where Xi called the pandas "envoys of friendship between the Chinese and American peoples."
Although the pandas' exact travel date remains unannounced, the pair will soon begin a nearly 8,000-mile journey to Georgia as part of ongoing international conservation and research efforts.
