London tube and some train fares to rise, says mayor Sadiq Khan

The 5.8% fare increase funds £2.2 billion in capital projects, with single Tube fare hikes capped at 20p while bus and tram fares remain frozen, officials said.

  • Next March, Transport for London will raise fares by 5.8%, affecting the London Underground, Elizabeth Line, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground and Travelcards.
  • Under the spending review, the UK Government linked over £2.2 billion of capital funding to TfL to a condition that fares rise by RPI+1, using July RPI as the base.
  • Specific fares show many single tickets rising by 5p–20p, with pay-as-you-go Tube fares capped at 20p; for example, Zone 1-2 peak fares could go from £3.50 to £3.70.
  • While national rail fares are frozen, TfL fares and Travelcards will rise, and City Hall is negotiating with the Department for Transport and the Treasury to offset knock-on effects.
  • A passenger watchdog warned, `On the other hand, delays to the delivery of new Tube and DLR trains, alongside worsening bus speeds across the capital, will make the overall package feel like a hard sell to many passengers`, despite funds supporting new projects for next year.
