Heineken Reveals Worries over Weight-Loss Drugs and Sales
Heineken said 10 million people used GLP-1 drugs in the United States last year and urged pubs to sell smaller serves and low-alcohol drinks.
- Heineken urged British pubs to adapt to rising GLP-1 weight-loss drug use or risk losing customers and revenue. A company presentation this month advised venues to promote half-pints and low-alcohol drinks to counter potential spending declines.
- Ten of 11 GLP-1 users interviewed by Reuters reported reduced drinking, citing physical discomfort or lack of desire. Some 10 million people in the US took medications like Ozempic and Wegovy last year, according to JPMorgan research.
- Beer generated nearly £14 billion of sales in British pubs and restaurants in the year to February 2026. Market research firm Circana found households with a GLP-1 user spent about 7% less on alcohol monthly, including around 13.5% less on beer.
- Heineken said, "We see some changes in consumption behaviour among users and will continue to monitor how these behaviours evolve in 2027." The brewer noted users increasingly opt for smaller serves and premium products.
- Joseph Schacht, a professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz, said the medicines could create a potential "Prozac moment" for AUD treatment, while posing a challenge for alcohol producers if broader groups of drinkers cut back.
