More than 20 skin whitening products on banned product lists and which authorities have warned that they may contain mercury have been identified for sale on markets operated by Amazon, Temu and TikTok Shop, according to a Reuters analysis.
Mercury-containing skin lighteners are extremely popular due to their price and effects, but they also pose a serious health risk and are banned from sale in many countries.
Reuters found that as of Sept. 1, more than 20 products on the banned list were available to customers on U.S. e-commerce platforms Amazon, Temu, and TikTok, as well as Amazon's third-party seller platforms in France, India, the United Arab Emirates, and Belgium.
