Wealthsimple Unveils AI Assistant and Major Product Expansion in Latest Showcase

Penny can cue transactions, flag duplicate charges and help with investing, while clients must confirm each action.

  • On Thursday, Toronto fintech firm Wealthsimple unveiled Penny, an AI assistant, at its 'Wealthsimple Presents' event in Massey Hall, alongside a dozen new banking, investing, and AI products.
  • Major Canadian and U.S. banks last month blocked third-party AI agents from accessing customer data, citing security concerns as tech giants integrate AI into financial services.
  • Penny automates e-transfers, flags duplicate charges, and executes trades, but requires explicit client confirmation before moving money. Wealthsimple senior director Sam Newman-Bremang said "One of the biggest issues with AI is that you're just handing over a login to some chatbot, now it can do anything with your money."
  • By early 2027, clients will connect accounts to ChatGPT or Claude with user-controlled access levels. Jordan Deutsch, director of software development, noted the firm built an audit trail to track data usage within the platform.
  • These developments follow a $425-million CAD Series F funding round at a $13.8-billion valuation announced last week. Wealthsimple also revealed Wealthsimple Pro, an advanced trading suite for active investors, and a business credit card launching by early 2027.
