Michael Carrick Delivers Passionate Speech Amid Manchester United Debacle: 'Respect This Football Club'
Carrick said United need humility and hard work to recover from a poor start, and he did not rule out changing Bruno Fernandes’ role.
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick delivered a five-minute monologue on Friday emphasizing the club's values of "humility", "resilience" and "earning the right to win" following a heavy Champions League defeat to Como in midweek.
Bruno Fernandes questioned Carrick's tactics on Wednesday after the 4-1 Champions League loss at Como; United have won only two of 11 matches and sit 13th in the Premier League.
Invoking Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby, Carrick told players: "We need to respect what it takes to be here, respect what it takes to win, what you have to do to win."
The 45-year-old manager did not rule out dropping Fernandes or stripping him of the captaincy when Bournemouth visit on Sunday, warning: "If you dont, this is not the place for you."
Despite mounting pressure with his job under threat, Carrick stated "100 per cent" he could turn the team's form around, adding he would "hold an umbrella for everyone else to stay dry" while bearing criticism.
