‘Everwood’ Met a Shocking Cancellation 20 Years Ago — Its Ending Explained
Writers filmed a backup finale after network executives canceled the family drama before its move to The CW.
On June 5, 2006, fans learned that Everwood had been canceled shortly before the fourth season finale aired, ending the drama's planned move to The CW network.
The cancellation occurred as The WB merged with UPN to create The CW, with the 11th season renewal of 7th Heaven—drawing more than 7 million viewers—displacing Everwood from the fall 2006 schedule.
Producers filmed a conclusive two-part finale titled "Foreverwood" to ensure closure, though critics divided sharply; Virginia Heffernan praised its "gorgeously sentimental extravaganza," while Hillary Frey deemed the storylines "trite and uncharacteristically cliché."
All four seasons remain available on Prime Video for fans to revisit, though revival prospects grew remote following the deaths of cast members Stephanie Niznik in 2019, Treat Williams in 2023, and Jon Beasley in 2023.
By 2021, optimism for revival had faded despite interest from Emily VanCamp, as creator Greg Berlanti cited budget and schedule constraints that made a return logistically challenging to organize.
