Evacuation Order Issued as Glacier Lake Bursts Northeast of Pemberton, B.C.
More than 20 properties are under evacuation as officials warn of hazardous debris flows and monitor whether additional emergency measures are needed.
The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District issued an evacuation order for more than 20 properties near Pemberton as a burst Place Glacier Lake sends hazardous debris flows toward Gates Lake and Poole Creek.
Flows from the current outburst are expected to be comparable to the 2024 event, which sent about 1.2 million cubic meters of water and sediment downstream, flooding properties.
Residents and hikers should stay away from Place Creek, Poole Creek, and all nearby water channels due to dangerous erosion and unstable streambanks, Jen Ford with the Regional District warned.
Technical experts anticipate flood waters will peak late Wednesday, July 1, with the outburst expected to last one to two days as conditions are continuously monitored.
Emergency Support Services remain available for affected residents, and those requiring assistance should contact the Canadian Red Cross as authorities assess whether additional emergency response measures are required.
