Auckland's First Electric Ferry Is on the Water

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, JUN 12 – The EVM200 ferry reduces emissions and fuel use, saving about 1.5 million litres of fuel annually, as part of Auckland Transport's Mission Electric initiative.

  • EV Maritime has introduced its inaugural fully electric ferry for passenger service, which begins operating today on the route connecting downtown Auckland to Half Moon Bay.
  • This launch is part of Auckland Transport's effort, supported by the New Zealand Government, to shift towards a more environmentally friendly fleet of ferries.
  • The ferry, part of the EVM200 class, features a lightweight carbon fiber hull optimized for low drag and uses the world’s first maritime CharIN Megawatt Charging System for rapid recharging.
  • The ferry travels the 10-mile route at speeds up to 25 knots, seats 230 passengers, and recharges during a 10-minute turnaround via two 1.1MW MCS charging inlets; CEO Michael Eaglen expressed great enthusiasm about introducing this vessel to service.
  • EV Maritime’s technology-transfer model supports local shipbuilders, boosts regional electric vessel manufacturing capability, and reflects its expanding global presence, including recent leadership appointments in North America.
