London Congestion Charge for EV Drivers Comes Into Effect
The daily Congestion Charge increased to £18 with EV discounts cut to 25% for cars, aiming to reduce an estimated 2,200 extra vehicles entering central London weekdays.
- Friday saw Mayor Sadiq Khan confirm EV drivers in central London must now pay the congestion charge, with the fee rising to £18 from £15 since 2020.
- Citing congestion models, TfL said the previous EV exemption undermines the CCZ and estimated around 2,200 additional vehicles would enter the zone on an average weekday next year.
- Under the new scheme, Auto Pay users can get a 25% discount, reducing the fee to 13.50, while EV discounts were cut from 100% to 25% for cars and 50% for vans and lorries.
- Residents within the zone retain reductions of up to 90%, and the change comes ahead of manic Monday and January 5, which the AA warned could see a spike in breakdown calls.
- TfL plans further reductions from March 4 2030, cutting EV discounts to 12.5% for cars and 25% for vans, while from March 1 2027 new residents must use EVs for the 90% discount.
