European nations agree to boycott World Cup if FIFA goes ahead with sell-off
UEFA said 55 member associations will skip FIFA events unless the plan is abandoned, as the proposal could give private investors up to a 20% stake.
- On Thursday, the Union of European Football Associations and its 55 member associations unanimously voted to boycott all FIFA competitions in protest of the governing body's plan to sell stakes to private investors.
- FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed creating a $20 billion commercial subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise , to manage World Cup commercial rights while offering minority stakes to private investors.
- Citing secrecy and private equity involvement including Joshua Kushner's firm, UEFA denounced the proposal as "irresponsible and indefensible" and accused FIFA of concealing plans from member associations.
- No European national teams will participate in any FIFA competition "for so long as these proposals remain alive," UEFA stated, unless FIFA abandons the plan entirely and provides binding assurances.
- With a September 19 deadline for FIFA's 211 member associations to accept the plan, observers monitor whether other confederations will follow Europe's lead in threatening boycotts.
