Electric cars accounted for 32.6% of sales, while Chinese automakers nearly tripled or doubled registrations, Reuters reported.
- On Thursday, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association released data showing new-car registrations rose 10.2% to 1.36 million vehicles across the European Union, Britain, and the European Free Trade Association in September.
- Strong demand for electrified vehicles drove the growth, with battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid registrations jumping 59.9%, 24%, and 5.3% respectively and accounting for 76.2% of all new vehicles.
- Conversely, petrol and diesel registrations fell 20.6% and 28.2% respectively, while Chinese automakers Chery and BYD nearly tripled and doubled sales, with Geely and SAIC reporting increases of more than 33% and 23%.
- The four Chinese carmakers' combined market share rose to 14.6% from 9.6% a year earlier, while Volkswagen and Renault registrations declined between 2.9% and 0.7%, and Stellantis gained 4.5%.
- This transition in Europe, supported by purchase incentives and broader model lineups, reveals a structural shift away from traditional fuels toward electrified vehicles as the automotive market undergoes fundamental transformation.
