EU bars Chinese firms from most medical device tenders
EUROPEAN UNION, JUN 20 – The EU imposes restrictions on Chinese medical device firms over €5 million contracts, citing discriminatory barriers and risks to healthcare systems, with 87% of Chinese procurement contracts deemed exclusionary.
- The European Union banned Chinese companies from bidding on public medical device contracts exceeding five million euros within the EU market in July 2025.
- This ban followed a year of unsuccessful negotiations after the Commission found China excluded EU-made medical devices from nearly 90% of its public procurement contracts.
- The EU uses the International Procurement Instrument introduced in 2022, which also limits Chinese inputs in successful bids to 50%, aiming to counteract discriminatory barriers China imposes on EU suppliers.
- Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic stated that the new policies are intended to create fairer conditions for companies within the EU, while China responded by accusing the EU of protectionist practices and applying double standards.
- The ban reflects rising EU-China trade tensions amid ongoing disputes in multiple sectors and precedes a diplomatic reset expected at the EU-China summit in July 2025.
