EU to bolster sovereign comms with 66 new satellites
The expanded constellation will boost secure government capacity by 60% and give EU emergency services and businesses new satellite communications options.
- Europe is expanding its IRIS2 satellite constellation to 348 units, with first launches scheduled to begin by 2029, aiming to boost secure governmental capacity by 60pc.
- Aiming to reduce reliance on external space-tech, the constellation will offer alternatives to services dominated by SpaceX's Starlink, enabling emergency services across the bloc to protect essential infrastructure.
- Built in collaboration with a consortium including Airbus, Deutsche Telekom, and Eutelsat, the future multi-orbit system will consist of 330 satellites in low Earth orbit and 18 in medium Earth orbit.
- Funding for the project exceeds €15.6bn, with Poland and Hungry committing more than €1bn collectively, while Spain has announced funds of between €1.6bn and €2bn alone.
- The Commission is channeling capital through its Scaleup Europe Fund, recently announcing €300m for Finnish start-up Iceye and backing Bavarian-based The Exploration Company in its funding round.
