President Erdoğan stated that the coup attempt targeted not only the government but also democracy and national will, and that the citizens' taking to the streets was a turning point.
Less than a week after the ban on the book by imprisoned presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, Erdoğan made striking statements regarding book bans, saying, "The most shameful book massacres occurred during coup periods."
