Wear a Lifejacket: Number One Rule of Drowning Prevention
The city says most drownings are preventable and urges residents to follow water safety steps as regional deaths and rescues rise.
Enderby council declared July 19 to 25 as National Drowning Prevention Week, with the City's proclamation noting that most drownings are preventable through education and respect for water dangers.
Multiple water emergencies prompted the declaration: a boater's body was recovered from Mara Lake by the RCMP's Underwater Recovery Team Tuesday, July 14, and a drowning occurred during the Across the Lake Swim Saturday, July 18.
On Wednesday, Kelowna RCMP released six water safety guidelines emphasizing sobriety, swimming skills, operator certification via Pleasure Craft Operator Card, and wearing appropriate PFDs for your activity.
The City urges residents to supervise children near water, refrain from alcohol during aquatic activities, and always wear lifejackets when boating; swimming lessons help develop essential safety skills.
Drowning remains a leading cause of preventable injury death, and National Drowning Prevention Week positions water safety as a Canada-wide priority through sustained education and awareness campaigns.
