'We’re Here to Save Lives': How a Rural Georgia Hospital Mobilized to Help 26 Patients From a Mass Shooting
Hospital staff said 18 gunshot victims arrived within minutes, and all 26 patients transported to the rural facility survived.
Early Sunday morning, a mass shooting occurred on Pine Street in Vienna, Dooly County, where roughly 1,000 people had gathered for a homecoming celebration. Crisp Regional Hospital treated 26 patients, including 18 with gunshot wounds.
Only seven medical workers were on duty when the Hospital received word that gunshot victims were on the way from Vienna, nine miles away. Clinical coordinator Jason Troup said, "I had one doc caring for them until the rest of the cavalry could get there."
The emergency response team grew to about 30 people to manage the influx, Surgeon Vincent Culpepper said. "The initial triage for us is what stays and what needs to go somewhere else," Culpepper explained, describing decisions about transfers to Macon.
All 26 patients brought to the 78-bed Hospital survived the mass-casualty incident. While 18 patients arrived with gunshot wounds, others suffered injuries while attempting to escape the chaos, including people struck by vehicles.
Steven Gautney, CEO of Crisp Regional, credited the Hospital's intensive trauma training for successfully managing the emergency. "Our whole mission is to do everything we can for the people in this region," Gautney said.
