Two People Are Now Known to Have Died in a Workplace Incident in County Down
Emergency services and inspectors are investigating after three ambulances and two hazard response teams responded to the scene, officials said.
Two people died following a workplace incident on Ballygowan Road in Crossnacreevy, County Down, on Friday after the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 10:45 AM.
Earlier reports indicated people were "trapped in a trench" while earthworks were underway at the site, prompting dispatch of three ambulances and two Hazardous Area Response Teams.
East Belfast MP and DUP Leader Gavin Robinson offered condolences, stating, "My thoughts are with their families and loved ones at this devastating time, and with the emergency services responding."
Police closed Ballygowan Road, forcing Ulsterbus 512/12 services to divert; stops at Crossnacreevy School, Roselawn, and Ryan Park remain out of service during emergency response.
The Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland is investigating on-site, liaising with emergency services and relevant agencies to determine the incident's circumstances and cause.
