Bomb Threat Diverts Plane of Haj Pilgrims in Indonesia, Second in Days
- On June 21, Saudia Airlines flight SV5688, carrying Haj pilgrims, was redirected to Medan’s Kualanamu Airport after air traffic control in Jakarta received a bomb threat concerning the flight.
- The flight was diverted following an email bomb threat while traveling from Jeddah to Surabaya via Muscat, marking a similar event to one that occurred earlier that same week.
- After landing, officials deployed a bomb squad to sweep the plane, and regional airport head Asri Santosa confirmed all 376 passengers from Java and 13 crew members were safe and operations continued normally.
- Polri chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that authorities are determining if the matter is under Indonesia’s legal authority, and assured that a comprehensive investigation is underway with the involvement of both the national anti-terror unit Densus 88 and the FBI.
- The passengers are expected to continue their trip on June 22, following ongoing safety inspections and increased security measures in response to the recent bomb threat involving Haj pilgrims.
