Millions of Phones Will Siren as Emergency Alert Activated

The UK government aims to improve public readiness by regularly testing an emergency alert system that has previously sent warnings to millions during severe weather and other crises.

  • On Sunday, September 7 at approximately 3pm, the UK government will carry out a nationwide drill by sending a practice alert to millions of mobile phones to verify the functionality of its emergency notification service.
  • This second system test follows a government commitment to ensure the system's readiness after its first test in April 2023 and several real warning uses since then.
  • The alert will cause phones on 4G and 5G networks to vibrate and sound a siren for up to 10 seconds, accompanied by a message clarifying the alert is a drill.
  • Since April 2023, the system issued five warnings including to 4.5 million people during January 2025's Storm Eowyn, 3.5 million during Storm Darragh, and 50,000 phones for a WWII bomb evacuation in Plymouth.
  • The test aims to familiarize the public with this vital tool which, as described by Chancellor Pat McFadden, is like a fire alarm always on standby to deliver life-saving advice when minutes matter.
